The annual Freedom Fund banquet of the Greater Terre Haute NAACP Branch will feature a keynote address by Melvin L. Burks, CEO of the Hamilton Center. Known for his servant leadership to Hamilton Center, Inc. for 40 years and the community, Burks has demonstrated his ability to lead as well as his passion for service.
Branch President Sylvester Edwards notes that “Mr. Burks always leads by example – as a mentor, a coach, an innovator. He implements programs that promote diversity and second chances – all consistent with the goals of the NAACP.”
Burks has been a part of the Terre Haute community and HCI Family since 1979. In 2012 he was appointed to CEO of HCI. In his tenure the community mental health center has added several new programs and services across their ten-county service area. Among those are the Military Veterans Program, the New Citizens Program (to help those with felonies regain their lives through re-entry), and WIN Recovery, the first opioid treatment program of its kind in Vigo County.
The Banquet will recognize local community members making contributions to our organization as well as the greater Terre Haute community. A recap of significant branch activities will demonstrate an interest in our future.
The NAACP event is set for Saturday, October 19 at MCL Banquet Center at Meadows. Reservations are required by October 4.
